Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver on some Canadian Politicians and Media’s Accusations of “Interference” by China in Canadian Elections
2023-03-16 17:16

Recently, some Canadian politicians and media repeated the so-called "China's interference in Canadian elections", smearing and discrediting the Consulate General of China and the consular officers. The Consulate General expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to it.

The Chinese side has made it clear on many occasions that China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and has never interfered in any Canadian elections and has not interested in to do so. The Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver exercises its consular function under Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and Consular Agreement Between the Government of the PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA and the Government of CANADA, shall be entitled to contact people from all walks of life, furthering the development of economic, trade, scientific, technological, cultural and educational relations between China and Canada and otherwise promoting their friendly relations and cooperation. It is a right granted by international law and also a common practice in international society. For a long time, Canada and a small group of western countries, have indulged in political manipulation on Taiwan question and issues related to China's Xinjiang and Hong Kong, condoned and supported anti-China activities and harmed China's security and stability. Even some Canadian municipal-level officials undermine China’s territory and sovereign integrity through Taiwan and Hong Kong questions. It is western countries such as Canada and the US that are interfering other country’s internal affairs, not China. Some Canadian politicians and media outlets, out of ulterior motives, have been making groundless accusations and spreading misinformation that the Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver interfered in Canada's elections and internal affairs. Though utterly groundless, these claims have seriously misled Canadian public opinion about China, jeopardized China-Canadian relations and damaged China's image.

Once again, we urge the relevant media and politicians to abandon ideological prejudice and abide by professional ethics, immediately stop stigmatizing the normal performance of duties and functions and stop smearing and attacking the Chinese Consulate General and the consular officers.
